Cholesterol naturally occurs in animal fat such as butter and eggs. Your body makes cholesterol, and therefore, limiting it in your diet is important. Look for foods that have healthier fats. Unsaturated fats like monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats are healthier fats that help lower your body’s total cholesterol and LDL (the “bad” cholesterol) without having a negative effect on your HDL (good cholesterol). Foods rich in monounsaturated fats include olive and canola oils and nuts and seeds. Polyunsaturated fats are found in vegetable oils like corn, safflower, sesame, sunflower and soybean.

If you are trying to reduce your cholesterol, look for foods labeled 'Low in Cholesterol' and 'Cholesterol Free'. Low in Cholesterol Foods have less than 20 milligrams of cholesterol, and less than 2 grams of saturated fat, per serving. Cholesterol Free foods contain less than 2 milligrams of cholesterol, and less than 2 grams of saturated fat, per serving.
